Tony Mears - Head Greenkeeper
Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club are delighted to have Tony Mears as their Head Green Keeper. Tony moved to the island, in early 2011, from the North East of England where he was Course Manager at Dinsdale Spa Golf Club.
As a youngster Tony played to a 2 handicap and even in those early years he was drawn to green keeping, helping out on the course whenever possible during school holidays. Tony is now one of a rare breed, holding the Master Green Keeper certificates parts 1 and 2.
One of the key motivators for Tony in deciding to make the long journey south was the opportunity and challenge of working on a James Braid designed course. He said, ‘the golf course has so much potential and some breathtaking holes. With lots of hard work and expertise we will deliver a first class heathland golf course of which we may all be proud. The challenge that lies ahead will be a true test not only of my abilities but those of my greenkeeping staff’.
